You don’t need a weatherperson to tell you that the temps are dropping. Which means kicky boots, warm puffy coats and fantastically dry skin. Here’s how to win the battle against dry skin during the fall and winter.
Dry Skin Tips for the Changing Seasons
Ease up on showering in hot water: On a cold morning, nothing feels better than a piping hot shower. But that hot water can break down the lipid barrier in your skin, causing a loss of moisture. You’re better off using lukewarm water in your shower or bath.
Switch to more hydrating skincare products: Taking stock of your skin care regimen is a good idea any time the seasons change. As we head into the colder, drier months, consider using a moisturizer that provides a little more hydration for dry skin. Make the switch from a light summer moisturizer to a cream-based one.
Use a moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a great ingredient for dry weather blues especially. It binds 1,000 times its weight in moisture. HA nourishes and hydrates collagen and is a great boost to your moisturizer. It smooths and softens your skin. Try Epicuren’s Moisture Surge Hyaluronic Acid Gel with aloe or Bioelements Moisture x10.
Boost those antioxidants: You’ll be inside more in the fall, on your computer and in artificial light. Blue rays emitted from lights and computer screens can deplete the skin’s natural antioxidants. This causes free radical damage like dehydration, dullness and surface wrinkles. Protect and moisturize dry skin with a hydrating moisturizer like Lutein Indoor Protective Day Creme from Bioelements.
Use a humidifier: Space heaters and central heating systems push hot, dry air into your environment. A humidifier is a great tool to add a little moisture to the air and keep your skin from getting too dry.
Exfoliate: Use a microfiber washcloth or sponge daily to rinse your face after washing. Use a good exfoliator to rid yourself of dead skin cells. The fresh skin underneath will be ready to better absorb your moisturizer and other products, making them that much more effective. Twice a week is fine.
Don’t forget your sunscreen: We tend to forget about sunscreen in the winter, but 95% of our exposure to the sun takes place during our normal daily life, not while we’re tanning. The sun’s glare, especially off ice and snow, can be just as harmful as in the summer. Don’t forget daily use of a good sunscreen.
